Dune Restoration Action Day 1
An amazing effort by the small team of volunteers today! 
We lugged 27 heavy Christmas trees and 10 even heavier straw bales to two sites: the previous access route near the new path at South Fistral + the path we have started to replant with marram a bit further up.
We dug trenches for the hay and trees so they could stand sturdy in the dunes. This was made all the more difficult by constant collapsing sides- evidence that the dunes really are unstable.
We successfully blocked the path securely at the first site, with any possible detour covered in prickly buckthorn branches.
Some marram grass was replanted in the gaps.
Signs were made from Fistral rocks to explain what we were doing and to utilise the new path.
At site 2, the bales and trees blocked the access from the beach side while buckthorn created a barrier from the dune path. This site has a few entry points so it isn’t 100% secure, but it’s certainly well on its way!
We had SOOOO many compliments and interest from passers by. The community has a lot of love for these dunes and it seems that everyone knows they need a bit of tlc. I’m sure we will have no problem getting trees from the community next year!
It was a really great day. We’re all knackered but very proud of ourselves for what we’ve achieved. Thanks to the weather for providing! And thanks so much to the volunteers who came along. We were all very responsible with our own gloves, masks and kept to social distancing.
